“पहाटेचा अंधार होता. काळ्या, बर्फासारख्या गुळगुळीत आणि पंचावन्न डिग्री तपमानाच्या पाण्यात लिन होती. वादळ येण्यापूर्वी असतो तसा समुद्र ऊर्जेनं भारला गेला होता. तिला जाणीव झाली, की आपल्याबरोबर कुणीतरी पोहत आहे. कुणातरी ’मोठ्या’पासून वाचण्यासाठी अँकोव्हीची हजारो पिल्लं ठिणग्यांसारखी सैरावैरा उडत होती. ते जे काही होतं, ते तिला पांढर्‍या शार्कइतकं मोठं वाटत होतं… …तो शार्क नव्हता, तर मैलभरापासून लिनच्या मागं येणारं एक देवमाशाचं पिल्लू होतं. लिन एक तासापेक्षा जास्त वेळ पोहत होती आणि विश्रांतीसाठी तिला पाण्यातून बाहेर येण्याची गरज होती. पण तिच्या लक्षात आलं, की तिनं जर तसं केलं तर ते पिल्लूही तिच्या मागोमाग येईल आणि फुप्फुसं फुटून मरून जाईल. देवमाशाचा बच्चा बेरिंग समुद्राकडे जाणार्‍या अठरा हजार मैलांच्या, तीन महिने चालणार्‍या स्थलांतराच्या सफरीवर होता. त्यातलं बरंचसं अंतर त्याची आई त्याला पाठीवरून नेणार होती आणि दुधासाठी तो आईवर अवलंबून होता. लिननं जर आई देवमाशाला शोधून काढलं नसतं, तर या पिल्लाच्या शरीरातील पाणी कमी झालं आणि उपासमारीनं तो मृत्युमुखी पडला असता. एवढा प्रचंड आई देवमासा अचानक त्या अफाट महासागरात किरकोळ वाटू लागला. लिन तिला कशी शोधू शकणार होती? सत्यघटनेवर आधारित… “
